How To Build A Dog House
Building a dog house is probably the least daunting of DIY projects. Still, if you’re not comfortable constructing from the top of your head, dog house instructions can help out in a big way. Choosing A Construction Material
There are a few options here. The most traditional DIY dog house is generally constructed out of wood. However, you can also opt for brick or metal. I would advise against using metal, as it can get really hot during summer, and it’s nowhere near as sturdy, especially if you’re using something as flimsy as sheets of iron. A nice wood like cedar is definitely the best option here.
Picking A Dog House Style
Here is the fun part! There are so many options here, and none of them are too hard, even for a true woodworking beginner. Most styles can be built with raw materials purchased from the lumber yard.
Here are the 2 most basic designs:
1) The traditional dog kennel is what what people have. It’s a one room, slightly elevated kennel with a flat or angular roof. You can scale it to any size, and all high quality building schematics will show you how to insulate and ventilate accordingly. You can customize many features, such as the color, whether you want to add a naming plaque, add a ring for a dog leash, etc..
2) For those of you feeling a bit more adventurous, why not go for a duplex dog house? Of course, a duplex is only good if you’ve got 2 dogs who don’t mind sleeping near each other. Having said that, you can fit an optional separating wall, which can be removed. This means your pets can sleep in their own room in summer, and together in winter for extra warmth!
Obtaining DIY Dog House Instructions
Your local hardware store is probably the best bet for hard copy building plans. However, if you’re keen to start building straight away, and want to save some money, the internet can provide you with downloadable plans as well. It’s as simple as opening a PDF file and printing out the instructions.
